In October 2021, I was selected to participate in an interactive workshop titled Critical Mapping in the Global South, organized by the Centre for Urban Policy and Governance at TISS in collaboration with the Beirut Urban Lab and supported by the Omidyar Network India.
Conducted by Ahmad Gharbieh, Assistant Professor at the American University of Beirut and co-founder of the Beirut Urban Lab, the workshop explored the politics embedded in cartographic practices. Through live demonstrations and case studies, it illustrated how mapping is not just a technical tool but a political act that can reframe how we see and engage with urban space.
The session focused on:
- Understanding who creates maps and for what purpose
- Challenging dominant narratives through spatial visualization
- Using mapping to democratize knowledge and promote just, inclusive urban practices
The workshop was a part of the Omidyar Series on Land, Housing and Property Rights: Tracing Policy Shifts and Emerging Issues in India and the Global South. It provided valuable methodological insights for scholars and practitioners interested in using critical mapping to support participatory planning, advocacy, and research.
